Hurghada with kids aged 6–10: planning boats, the desert and Luxor

Updated September 10, 2026 · 7 min read

Hurghada: Royal Seascope Submarine Cruise with Snorkel Stop

For children aged six to ten, the Giftun Islands, a horse ride and the temples of Luxor can appeal to quite different holiday interests. Whether your child swims confidently, enjoys riding or is interested in pharaohs helps you choose more than their date of birth. A full boat day is not compulsory just because other families book it.

The examples below come from our GetYourGuide catalogue dated 10 September 2026. Starting prices are per person, not confirmed child fares. Select the date, children’s ages and option before paying; transfers and extras may also change the final price.

First the short boat trip, then the long one

Two much-reviewed offers show how long an island day can be: the yacht trip to three islands with a dolphin search and lunch is listed at eight hours, from €44, with over 8,200 reviews. The Orange Bay cruise with lunch lasts eight and a half hours, from just under €46, with 4.9 stars from over 6,600 reviews. Good reviews do not tell you how your child will experience that day.

For a first boat outing, we would plan something shorter. The Royal Seascope semi-submarine is listed at two hours, from just under €19. It has an underwater observation deck and a snorkel stop. If your child only wants to look through the windows, check beforehand how staying on board during the stop is organised. The advertised trip duration does not tell you when you will be back at the hotel.

The speedboat to two islands with a dolphin search, listed at four hours and from just over €33, is another possibility. That is shorter than the yacht trip, but it is not a two-hour trial. Children who enjoy speed may like it; confident swimming alone does not make it the right boat for them. Ask about seating, boarding and conditions in windy weather. More on choosing: Boat trips with kids. Island trips: Orange Bay & Giftun Island.

Try snorkelling beforehand

At a boat snorkel stop, deep water, a ladder entry and other guests can come together. That is an awkward place to find out for the first time whether a mask fits. Practise beforehand under supervision in the hotel pool or at a suitable shallow beach. A child who does not want to enter the water there does not need a booked reef stop as encouragement.

Orange Bay is on Giftun and has a sandy beach. Time on the beach and a snorkel stop out at a reef are different parts of the excursion. Check how much time each gets; the name Orange Bay alone does not answer that. Orange Bay

Before booking, have a suitable child-sized life jacket and supervision when entering the water confirmed. Check the mask fit and whether a suitable wetsuit is available and costs extra. Breaks on board should fit into the programme without a child having to join every stop. Individual offers: Snorkelling in Hurghada.

Desert trips and riding: the option matters

The quad trip with a camel ride and optional barbecue is listed at three hours, from just over €23, with 4.9 stars and over 3,200 reviews. The barbecue is explicitly optional. Dinner should therefore not enter your family budget just because it appears in the title. Another quad trip through the desert and towards the Red Sea starts at just under €13; that also offers different options.

The short descriptions of these two examples do not settle whether a primary-school child can take part. Have participation, passenger arrangements and supplied equipment confirmed for your child’s actual age. Do not plan on them driving because the starting price is low. If the camel ride is what interests you, ask whether a quad ride is needed at all. Desert safari from Hurghada

The beach and desert horse ride with transfer, from just under €11 and with nearly 1,700 reviews, could be an alternative. Its language versions list one to three hours. Confirm the booked duration, transfer and requirements for riding experience and age. “Beach horse ride” does not promise a beginner’s pony led by a guide.

Dolphins without a sighting promise

Around Hurghada, Dolphin House is used for places including the Sha’ab El Erg reef. These are wild dolphins; the excursion name does not guarantee seeing them. Dolphin World in Makadi Bay, by contrast, is a dolphinarium with a show of trained animals. Your child should know the difference before choosing. Our catalogue does not establish better sighting odds in the morning. CDWS, Dolphin World. Compare: Dolphins in Hurghada.

Mini Egypt Park, the museum or Luxor?

Mini Egypt Park is in Makadi Bay and displays models of Egyptian landmarks, including Karnak and the pyramids. You can decide together which building you would later like to see in the original. For children who prefer real antiquities, Hurghada Museum is an alternative in town. Mini Egypt Park, Location, Hurghada Museum. More places: What to see in Hurghada and Things to do in Hurghada.

Luxor needs a separate decision about travel time. Local operator HurghadaToGo gives around 300 road kilometres via Safaga and Qena; depending on vehicle and pickup rounds, it allows four to six hours each way. That is a guide, not a promised journey time for your booking. A blanket pickup window of 3–5am would be wrong: one of our examples explicitly lists late morning. Have pickup and return confirmed for your hotel. HurghadaToGo

Admission arrangements differ too. The day trip from €67.50 lists Tutankhamun’s tomb as optional; the example from €80.03 describes it as included. Both visit the Valley of the Kings. Compare the chosen option rather than assuming similar titles mean identical inclusions. Whether the long drive suits your child depends on their interest and stamina. Luxor day trip from Hurghada

Cairo still takes a whole excursion day even by air: the coach example from €65.33 lists 15–20 hours depending on the language version, while the flight example from €239 lists 16–17 hours. These are advertised durations, not guaranteed hotel-door-to-hotel-door times. Ask about actual pickup and return times before comparing the demands of each trip. Cairo & the pyramids from Hurghada

Leave room in the week

After a long island day, we would leave a day without a booked excursion. A spare slot also helps if a boat trip is moved because of the weather. That does not establish how often cancellations happen. Other ages are covered in Hurghada with kids.

Hula Hula with massage lasts eight hours in the catalogue and lists lunch, massage and snorkelling. This establishes neither a minimum age nor an exclusion of children. Ask about music volume, quiet seating and the child policy before booking it as a family outing.

Do not book diving as a surprise. PADI gives a minimum age of eight for Bubblemaker and ten for Discover Scuba Diving. The introduction takes place in a pool or pool-like conditions. This does not promise that every Hurghada dive centre offers the appropriate children’s programme. Check the programme and prerequisites with the centre and medical questions with a doctor. PADI children’s programmes, Discover Scuba Diving. Local offers: Diving in Hurghada.
