Hurghada blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing: what matters underwater, in the desert and on the road

Most articles about accessible travel mean wheelchairs. This one doesn’t. It’s for blind and visually impaired travellers, and for anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing – and for the people who travel with them.

First, what applies here too: not one of the 224 short tour descriptions we compare for Hurghada mentions sign language, audio description, assistance dogs or written safety briefings. What follows comes from operators, associations, tour providers and travel portals, each with the source named. Where we found nothing, that’s stated too.

Deaf and hard of hearing: communication when diving

For a diving course in Hurghada, “English-speaking guide” is therefore not enough. Tell the dive centre how you communicate and have it confirm how theory, briefings and underwater communication will work. Diving hand signals and the sign language you use are separate questions. What support to check on land

Your Egypt Tours lists a tour for deaf travellers that includes Hurghada. Tour listing Before booking, have the operator confirm which sign language is offered and whether support extends to excursions in Hurghada. The tour’s name alone does not answer these questions.

On a boat trip, quad ride or snorkelling excursion, you need to understand the safety briefing. The short descriptions in our comparison do not confirm a written version. Ask beforehand whether you can read the briefing or have the procedures demonstrated in advance. Also check how the guide will get your attention during the trip. Blind and visually impaired: Hurghada is a place to look at – but not only that

Royal Seascope includes an underwater observation deck; the excursion in our catalogue also lists a snorkelling stop. If you have little or no sight, check beforehand which parts you want to take part in and what support is possible. One specific Hurghada listing is “Horse Riding on Red Sea Beach, Desert with Transfer” (tour 1015327), from €10.80 per person. The German listing says one hour and the Italian one says one to three hours; confirm the duration of your chosen option before booking. This is the offer price, not a promise of individual assistance. Ask about a led horse, help mounting and communication that works for you. Travelling with an assistance dog

For an assistance dog, entry requirements for Egypt and return requirements for your home country must be checked separately. Have the vaccinations, documents, identification and any tests required for your route confirmed in advance by the responsible veterinary authorities. Check cabin carriage separately with the airline.

Also ask your hotel and excursion operator in writing whether your assistance dog can enter the restaurant, transfer vehicle and boat. Plan road crossings in Hurghada beforehand

The personal blog “Richis Urlaubstipps” warns against relying on cars stopping or flashing their lights at Hurghada’s zebra crossings. Personal account This does not describe every crossing. Ask your hotel about the specific crossing and assistance if you cannot reliably see or hear traffic.

What to clarify in writing before booking

• Is the safety briefing also available in writing, or in advance?
• Can my companion stay beside me in the water, and do they pay the full price?
• Is my assistance dog allowed on board or in the transfer bus?
• How does the guide communicate with me if I can’t hear or see them?

For divers, there’s one more question: has the dive centre worked with deaf or blind divers before? The answer says more than any description.

When we advise against it

Booking Royal Seascope mainly to hear explanations about the reef. The observation deck offers a visual experience; the recorded short description promises no audio description. Ask about commentary and which other parts of the programme you could take part in.

Booking a quad tour before communication is agreed. An explanation before departure is not enough if you cannot perceive later instructions. Have the signals used during the ride explained, then decide with the operator whether you can take part.
